word “prophesy” (tinnabhe’), was the very act of proclaiming the message of doom. It was in uttering his prophecy of the impending exile that Amos, in the eyes of Amaziah, had acted as a nabhi. Amos is in perfect agreement with this understanding of the term. In his rejection of the fact that he was not always a prophet and that he was not of prophetical descent, there may possibly be implied a criticism of some of the prophets of the time.
